$1.4M effort develops reusable sponges to soak up harmful chemicals from water

Researchers are developing specialized, reusable sponges to remove harmful chemicals known as PFAS from water. PFAS is an abbreviation for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are long-lasting manufactured chemicals that have been used for decades in products such as makeup, nonstick pans and firefighting foam.

The eight-minute documentary, produced last fall by students John Taylor and Carter Hayek, proves the catchphrase, as it chronicles the university s efforts to track campus spread of coronavirus by testing wastewater from student dorms. The testing effort, led by Pepper, helped stop at least one COVID-19 outbreak during the first week of fall classes, and the success was widely covered in national media. Solution Number Two premiered last week as part of the School of Theatre, Film and Television s annual What s Up, Docs? screening event featuring short documentary films produced by Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts students. Instead of hosting the usual in-person premiere at The Loft Cinema, the school in the College of Fine Arts partnered with the local theater to debut this year s
