New drive-thru COVID vaccination, testing site opens in Athens
The Northeast Health District opened a new drive-thru location for COVID-19 tests and vaccinations Tuesday at 355 Oneta St. off North Chase Street in Athens.
Two other locations, one in Winterville and another on Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens, have been closed, according to a news release from Sarah Peck, clinic manager for the Clarke County Health Department.
On Monday, the health department began offering vaccinations to people 65 and older, along with emergency first responders, including law enforcement officers.
The testing and vaccinations are free, but appointments are required.
“We have greatly expanded our hotline both in terms of staffing and provider support, but we are receiving thousands of calls a day and hold times are still long,” District Administrator Emily Eisenman said in the release.
