After a dark year, we’re beginning to see a little light around us.
Over these past months, five local artists sought creative inspiration as a guide out of darkness into the light. These painters Elisabeth Hudgins, Kat Jamieson, Linda Maldonado, Elise Ritter and Deborah Taylor formed the Arlington-based collaborative, Studio 10 Artists, and met via weekly Zooms to discuss, explore and create a new exhibition entitled “Ambient Light.”
“Ambient” light is the atmosphere that surrounds and illuminates any environment. Using their own style, unique vision, and medium of choice (watercolor, oil, acrylic, collage and ink), these artists have interpreted ambient light in various ways: physical and spiritual; external or internal; real or imagined.

2020 was a scary year. But from this comes compelling artwork that also highlights hope. The Arlington Artists Alliance’s juried gallery, Gallery Underground, will feature
Dreams and Nightmares from February 1-26, a fascinating all-media national juried exhibition. Artists were tasked with interpreting the theme, from the beautiful and sublime to the dark and twisted.
Juried by D.C. sculptor Emily Francisco, the works chosen from around the country range from dreamy and figurative abstracts and humorous daydreams, to eerie landscapes and depictions of terrifying, living-nightmare psychotic episodes. Since September, Crescendo has been meeting virtually each Monday for interactive coaching, conversation and collaboration. Although quite different from traditional meetings usually four youth musicians form a string quartet and rehearse with a coach each week in preparation for live performances the content online has been an engaging, elevated musical experience that the twenty-seven members in grades 7-12 look forward to every week.
The virtual performance premieres on Arlington Philharmonic’s YouTube Channel on December 15, and is a montage of the eight different string quartets performing the first movement of Mendelssohn’s triumphant String Quartet 3 in D Major, all separately recorded from their homes. The video is artfully compiled by Matt Richardson, a violinist with 9th Street Quartet, Crescendo’s Quartet-in-Residence.
