When asked why they made the decision to give a large gift to establish an endowment, Butch Diesslin said, “A major reason for my endowing a scholarship at VCC is my receiving scholarships when I was in college. I am the second oldest child in a family with eight children. I received a ‘Tuition and Fees’ schola

UWNEMN campaign raises more than $2 million

UWNEMN Executive Director Erin Shay said the results are inspiring. “2020 was a difficult year in many ways, but these results are a testament to what our communities can do when we pull together to face a crisis,” she said. “It just goes to show you that on the Iron Range, people take care of each other.” Funds were raised through local workplace campaigns, online donations, mail donations, fundraisers, and grant writing. They will be used in the coming year to support UWNEMN partner agencies: Advocates for Family Peace, Angel Fund, Arrowhead Center Adolescent Treatment, Camp Chicagami, Care Partners, Ely Community Health Center, Ely Community Resource, food shelves area-wide, Girl Scouts of MN and WI Lakes and Pines, Northern St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity, Northwoods Partners, Project Care, Range Transitional Housing, Salvation Army Hibbing, Salvation Army Virginia, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, ServeMinnesota Reading Corps, Sexual Assault P

New vending machine at Ely Elementary dispenses only books

Keith Vandervort ELY – Washington Elementary students received a new vending machine last week. But they can’t use their allowance money on juice boxes, candy bars and other junk food. This vending machine dispenses only books. And this vending machine doesn’t take money. It takes golden tokens that students can earn through the school’s Paw Pride program by being respectful, responsible, cooperative and safe. The Ely Community Resource’s initiative was unveiled last Thursday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. ECR’s Julie Hignell, Jill Swanson and Janine LaMontagne, along with K-5 Principal Anne Oelke and third-grade students Elliot Eastham and Violet Franciskovich, marked the introduction of the new machine in the school hallway near the school office.

Helping for the holidays

Keith Vandervort ELY –Just in time for the holidays, Memorial High School is giving back to the Ely community through a variety of service projects involving school staff teamed with students. The idea developed as a way to bring students together while distance-learning protocols remain in place because of COVID-19. “We are supplementing our distance-learning, and the mental health challenges of feeling isolated, with activities in mind to support our community,” said 6-12 Principal Megan Anderson. “We are working on all kinds of community projects. Our students had lots of great ideas.” One cohort of students asked for donations of unused Christmas decorations and collected the extra holiday cheer last week to light up the school.
