INA’S INSIGHTS: Elizabeth Corbin Braxton: A Passion for Freedom

Carter Braxton was a signer of the Declaration of Independence on Aug. 2, 1776. He was a delegate from Virginia who later joined the Committee of Safety, which passed legislation to organize militia and Minutemen.
I often think about these 55 men who made so much sacrifice to create our nation. They came day after day to that hot, musty, airless hall in Philadelphia with windows shuttered from prying citizens who wanted to kibitz and influence their solemn task. Things had to be secretive and contained and above all, a deep-rooted commitment to “Public Ethics” had to be shared.
