Haydn composed his Lord Nelson Mass during a time of storms and stress, when the world was scary, the future was murky, and music served both to reflect and to relieve the anxieties of the day. In this work, we find some of Haydn's most tempestuous music, and some of his sunniest. The Lord Nelson is considered one of Haydn's greatest achievements, and we are excited to partner with Men in Blaque to present it with full orchestra and some of our favorite soloists: Marlissa Hudson, soprano; Jane Shim, mezzo-soprano; Jon Lee Keenan, tenor; and David Stoneman, bass-baritone.
The Orange Coast College Symphony will have a new conductor at the helm as the College prepares for a phased return to campus in Fall 2021. OCC has hired Dr. Mathew Ward to lead its prestigious community performing group, which has been part of the Costa Mesa campus for 60 years.
Dr. Ward is a Southern California native who earned degrees in violin and conducting from the Longy School of Music in Boston and Louisiana State University. He has previously performed as a violinist with organizations such as the Boston Civic Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic and the San Diego City Ballet Symphony. In 2010 he toured with La Primavera Symphony throughout Italy as concertmaster, and participated in the Australian International Music Festival, where the orchestra was awarded a silver medal for a performance in the Sydney Opera House.

Orange County Women’s Chorus
The Orange County Womenâs Chorus normally rehearses in Newport Beach and offers several concerts here and elsewhere several times every year, but due to the pandemic has â like most arts organization â transitioned to virtual concerts.
Last December, the group brought holiday cheer to patrons with a seasonal-themed concert called âSomething New.â
Now, the Orange County Womenâs Chorus is back with another virtual concert called, appropriately, âZoom Out,â on Sunday, May 16.
After a year of computer screens and cancelled plans, the Chorus wants to remind everyone of the wide world that awaits us in the post-pandemic era, and that weâve always been able to visit through our music.
Use masks, stay at home, no parties this year
It’s the sharp rise in cases today that we fear
Please practice compassion and kindness, a much needed art.
But parading for freedom is what Newport will do
With Mayor Muldoon enjoying the fare
They want their fun Christmas, they don’t seem to care
Does this sound like neighborly kindness to you?

Hopefully the organizers of Newport Beach’s privately organized, unauthorized, boat parade are paying for the harbor department, water safety and police expenses related to their event.
