A Dhaka court today sentenced Partha Gopal Banik, a suspended deputy inspector general (prisons) of Sylhet division, to eight years' imprisonment in a case filed over recovery of Tk 80 lakh from his Dhanmondi residence in July 2020.

DHAKA, Bangladesh A court in Bangladesh on Sunday awarded conditional bail to a journalist known for her strong reporting on official corruption amid protests at home and abroad calling for her release.
Rozina Islam, a senior reporter for the leading Prothom Alo newspaper, has been held in detention since her arrest on Monday.
Her lawyer, Ehsanul Haque Shomaji, said Islam must surrender her passport before bail is granted.
Prosecution lawyer Abdullah Abu did not object to the bail request, and both sides told reporters that Magistrate Baki Billah mentioned in his order that mass media play a supporting role in democracy.
Journalist Rozina Islam gets bail
A Dhaka court has granted bail to Prothom Alo senior reporter Rozina Islam till July 15 in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah passed the order virtually on Sunday morning upon a bond of Tk 5,000.
The court also asked Rozina to submit her passport before it.
Rozina Islam’s lawyer Ehsanul Haque Shomaji said, “The court heard the arguments from sides and granted her bail upon a bond of Tk 5,000.”
On May 20, the same court heard the bail petition and set today to pass the order.
The journalist was shown arrested in the case and sent to Kashimpur Women’s Jail on May 18 after her bail was rejected.
