The World Health Organization is supposed to be the preeminent organization that governs just that, the worlds health. It played a key role in eradicating smallpox, and significantly reducing the cases of polio around the globe. Yet, when the world was faced with the outbreak of covid19, the pandemic, we saw that the w. H. O. Does not always serve all of its members equally. We saw it is not an organization that serves all of humankind, but instead perhaps an organization that became beholden to, or are trapped in, politics. When it was most essential that the w. H. O. Be able to step up
March 2014, Doctors Without Borders said we are overwhelmed. This is obviously in west africa and the context of ebola. We are overwhelmed, this disease is out of control. We need help. End of march 2014. In august, the w. H. O. Declared a health emergency. About march, 300 people had died. By august, the disease had become far more widespread. That delay is what a lot of us have focused on and have asked hard questions about why was there that delay . And how do we make sure that doesnt happen again . I do think as a response, w. H. O. Has been far quicker. There have actually been some people who said it was too kbik to declare this time. Its not the same disease, it doesnt spread the same way. W. H. O. Did it very narrowly. They did it in the context of microcephaly and said this is a Public Health emergency. I personally dont think they overreacted. I think its a personally reasonable call, but it doesnt reassure me and ill tell you why. Right now, theres a spotlight on w. H. O. An
