No Positive Covid-19 Case In Schools So Far – Minister NyaLonje – Face of Malawi

Education Minister Agnes Nyalonje says the country’s schools did not register any positive Covid-19 cases in the first wave of the pandemic. Presenting a ministerial statement in Parliament, Nyalonje says her ministry has received K5 billion from government for preparing schools in readiness for reopening in the second wave of the pandemic. She says the money will be used for recruitment of teachers, buying tents and construction of low cost classrooms, among others to decongest classes. She says so far, her ministry has released K1.14 billion of the K5 billion. She says procurement of tents has faced some delays due to overwhelming demand of the tents.

CSEC Against Suspension of Delinking UNIMA

Civil Society Education (CSEC) has faulted the University of Malawi Council following its decision to suspend the delinking process of university constituent colleges. Yesterday the UNIMA council announced that it has resolved to suspend the process pending a functional review that will provide guidance on what needs to be done. CSEC Executive Director Benedicto Kondowe says the de-liking process was consultative and the council cannot undermine the process. Education rights activists want President Lazarus Chakwera and Education Minister Agnes Nyalonje to intervene in the sudden suspension of the process to unbundle University of Malawi. The University Council says it has but a former member of the Council, Limbani Nsapato demands the suspension should be withdrawn in seven days.
