Hoffenheim barely laid a glove on Frankfurt in a one-sided first half. Kostic was dovetailing with Amin Younes to great effect, with the duo combining for the opener in the 15th minute. Younes collected a smart flick-on from Daichi Kamada before playing in Kostic, who drove the ball across Oliver Baumann with unerring accuracy to bring up his second goal in three games. Kostic turned provider for Kamada just past the half-hour mark, but the Japan international s header was chalked off for a clear offside. Another Kostic set-piece then put a golden opportunity on a plate for defender Martin Hinteregger, whose free downward header was straight at Baumann.

Frankfurt were the dominant side for long periods in the first 45. Just seven minutes in, Aymen Barkok flashed an effort wide of Ralf Fährmann s goal frame, which was rattling midway through the half when Martin Hinteregger flicked Amin Younes near-post corner against the woodwork. Eintracht s next effort told, though, as Andre Silva controlled a shot from Erik Durm that was going wide, before firing into the corner on the turn. Shaken but not stirred, Schalke served up an instant response through 19-year-old Hoppe, who collected from Benjamin Stambouli, showed Evan N Dicka and Hinteregger a clean pair of heels, and poked through the legs of Kevin Trapp for 1-1. Silva threatened to restore parity with a shot from a tight angle, but Fährmann beat it clear to send the sides in level at the break.

When these sides met 10 days ago in the Bundesliga, it was Leverkusen who took an early lead in Frankfurt, but roles were reversed this time as Amin Younes – the scorer of Eintracht’s equaliser that day – put the visitors ahead with only six minutes played after Andre Silva flicked on Daichi Kamada’s ball into the box. Bayer took a few minutes to get going but were handed a route back into the tie when Erik Durm handled Leon Bailey’s cross in the box. Alario stepped up and converted to send last season’s beaten finalists into the break level.
