Today, visitors to the 120,000-square-foot building at East Third Street and Founder’s Way must don respirators and protective gear to visit the mold-and asbestos-riddled building that once housed Bethlehem Steel mainframe computers. Local developer Michael Perrucci, who owns it and the adjacent 13-story general office building, sees the smaller annex as the perfect way to launch a phased redevelopment of the site. But first he must environmentally clean-up the annex he hopes to renovate into modern offices.

For about 20 years, Ahart’s Market, 410 Montclair Ave., has been a vital source of high-quality and affordable food for residents of South Bethlehem and neighboring Fountain Hill. News broke last week that Ahart’s would be closing, leaving South Bethlehem with C-Town Supermarket as its only full-service grocery, prompting a groundswell of community support urging the city to offer incentives to attract another grocery store.

The developers want to tweak the city zoning rules governing the redevelopment of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. world headquarters to allow for more parking near proposed medical buildings. Bethlehem City Council Tuesday night scheduled an April 20 public hearing on the zoning text amendment request. The planning commission will review the request at a 5 p.m. meeting March 11.
