County officials will replace and potentially widen a historic bridge in Mercer County, but residents living close to the bridge said they oppose its expansion due to traffic concerns.
Built in 1896, the bridge spanning Peddie Lake on East Ward Street in Hightstown has been deemed to be structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, according to county spokeswoman Julie Willmot.
The county is committed to replacing all SD/FO bridges, she said. At 255 feet long and 22.5 feet wide, the bridge’s length won’t change, but officials are still working on determining the width of its replacement, she said.
