It was a battle of NIMBYs versus developers during this week s meeting of the New Braunfels City Council. On Monday, May 10, an ordinary council meeting transformed into a nearly six-hour debate between the past and future of this San Antonio suburb, with heated exchanges between the public and dais.
In between administering police chief oaths, pledging allegiance to the Texas flag, and other small-town business, were four agenda items dealing with rezoning, including construction of a doctors office. While all items were met with vocal disapproval from residents in attendance, it was one item Item H that really caused tempers to flare.
New Braunfels has a new police chief after city council members unanimously confirmed the appointment of Keith Lane to the post during its Monday meeting.
The selection of Lane, who had been serving in an interim capacity since late last year, comes following a nationwide search by the city, assisted by the Keller-based executive recruitment firm of Strategic Government Resources.
A field of 62 candidates from 15 states â including 35 from Texas â was narrowed down to four finalists who visited New Braunfels this week for in-person interviews and tours of the community and meetings with officers and employees at the police department, according to City Manager Robert Camareno.

New Braunfels City Council members on Monday are expected to discuss and consider a recommendation by the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation approving an expenditure of up to $400,000 to Frantic Holdings, LLC for a project that would bring high-speed broadband infrastructure and services to commercial customers in downtown and other areas of the city.
As part of an effort to increase broadband availability, the EDC in May 2020 contracted with Alk Development Services to oversee the project planâs development with Frantic that would bring broadband services at affordable rates to downtown businesses initially.
Frantic plans to utilize existing street poles to deliver backbone routes and connections to each building, using available city and New Braunfels Utility easements as necessary.Â
