ATLAS psychometrician awarded grant for improving software, methods for educational research

Tue, 04/06/2021 LAWRENCE  Jake Thompson, senior psychometrician with Accessible Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Systems at the University of Kansas, has received a $225,000 grant from the Institute of Education Sciences, National Center for Educational Research. Titled Improving Software and Methods for Estimating Diagnostic Classification Models and Evaluating Model Fit, the grant will help reduce hurdles among educational researchers. “Diagnostic classification models are flexible and informative, but the code knowledge required is a significant barrier to entry,” said Thompson, who won the grant through the 2021 Statistical and Research Methodology in Education competition. “This project will make these models more accessible, helping researchers understand how knowledge, skills and understandings are acquired.”

NJ schools to get $1.2 billion, assessments may be canceled

New Jersey plans to funnel $1.2 billion to mostly low-income school districts and for mental health programs, Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday. His administration will also seek a federal waiver for statewide assessments this spring.  The use of federal coronavirus relief funds should help give school communities flexibility and support, Murphy said, to best meet the individual needs of their students during this challenging time. He has noted many times in the past how virtual schooling has added a new layer of stress on students and their families.  Educators and students have endured a great deal over the past 11 months,” acting Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan said in a statement. “These additional federal funds will support targeted initiatives to enhance academic enrichment and mental health interventions for all students and educators.”
