The crossings had created nuisances to nearby residents with the sounding of train horns and crossing bells, and to motorists who had to experience traffic backups with the closure of crossing gates. Additionally, the crossings posed safety risks to motorists, pedestrians and train occupants with all eight crossings in the busiest segment of the LIRR for both train and vehicular traffic. The timely elimination of the crossings is just one significant early benefit of the transformative expansion project, which also includes the renewal of stations, raising of bridges and upgrading of switches and infrastructure before crews add a third track to the LIRR Main Line to reduce congestion, expand the railroad’s capacit

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) LIRR Expansion Project is closing the Main Street railroad crossing in Mineola. It marks the final LIRR Expansion Project grade crossing that is being eliminated. Since construction began on the LIRR Expansion Project just over two years ago, grade crossings at Covert Avenue and S. 12th Street in New Hyde Park, New Hyde Park Road in Garden City, two crossings at Willis Avenue in Mineola, School Street in Westbury and Urban Avenue in New Cassel also have been closed.
Rollover injures driver
AUBURN â A driver suffered injury in a rollover crash Monday at 1:36 p.m. on North Street, west of Indiana Avenue, the Auburn Police Department said.
Merry B. Kennedy, 65, of Kendallville sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital by an EMS ambulance, a police report said.
Berry reportedly told police she was driving eastbound when she thought a vehicle swerved into her lane. She swerved to the right and struck a light pole, causing her 2007 Ford Escape to flip and land on its top.
Police estimated damage to the vehicle and pole of $10,000 to $25,000.
