Going ahead with May's Crawley council elections 'would be irresponsible'

A previous council election count at the K2 leisure centre Peter Lamb (Lab, Northgate) has supported a call from his opposite number, Duncan Crow (Con, Furnace Green), for the council’s CEO to write to the government and ask for another postponement. Like hundreds of councils across the country, Crawley was due to go to the polls last year but, because of the pandemic, the elections were put back. One year on and the West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner elections are also due to be held – but no definitive word has been given as to whether this will actually happen.

Unpopular plans to close two West Sussex tips are shelved

Dr James Walsh HUGELY unpopular proposals to close two of West Sussex County Council’s tips and bring in charges for DIY waste have been dropped. The news was announced at a scrutiny committee meeting on Monday and are set to be finalised at a meeting of the cabinet next week. The plans were announced as the council attempted to plug a multi-million pound gap in its budget and would have saved a total of £345,000 in 2021/22. But Tony Kershaw, director of law, told the meeting that the provisional local government settlement – how much money authorities receive from central government – meant a number of proposed cuts could be dropped.
