coming out here and is now poisoning the gulf of mexico. what kind of oversight did you have on that drilling operation? we had the sort of oversight that an architect has on a building site. it is the way the industry works. it is the industry structure so we had oversight of the we had the design, they were doing the building. so they had the design. bp had the design. transocean was doing the building along with halliburton and other subcontractors as well. but when it comes for having an emergency plan for such a huge drilling operation, if something were to go wrong, did they have any kind of a plan in place? reporter: well, this was before any sort of investigation was done about how this happened and what happened to the blowout preventer and hayward at the time seemed to be just as curious as everyone else about how something like this could happen. but it was pretty clear he felt that this event had been so rare that bp, like the rest of the industry, thought it could
to 15 stations have been closed by demonstrators who tripped safety switches and cut off power at the pumps. green peace claims the people i am memberized nearly 50 service stations. bp says it is trying to get all of them back up and running as soon as possible. developing story this morning. bp s ceo tony hayward, famously said he wanted his life back, is getting his wish. the company announce thing morning he will step down from his post on october 1st and right now it looks like hayward will stay with bp heading up a new oil and gas venture in russia. hayward will eventually be replaced by the man who has been overseeing day-to-day cleanup operations, bob dudley. dave mattingly joins us live from new orleans with a never-before-seen interview with outgoing bp chief tony hayward. david, you conducted the interview in the gulf during the beginning of the response effort in early may. you had a chance to ask him a lot of questions about, you know, what went wrong, was there a back
we re more than three months into the gulf oil disaster and bp is still trying to plug the ruptured well. that and the clean-up delayed just a bit because of stormy seas, our reynolds wolf is tracking it all from the coast. i m covering this from grand isle, louisiana, where remnants of bonnie continue to move inland and boats from the deepwater horizon continue their journey out to sea. the one of the key vessels into the drilling operation not relief well to stop it altogether. it won t be one of those situations where they ll be able to resume work immediately. they ve go a a little set-up to do, they can take the next 36 hours. but even at that point to get to the point of drilling the relief wells and going through the top kill operation that could take one to two weeks and we re talking about getting into perhaps the middle or late half of august before they re able to finalize with the bottom kill. reynolds wolf, cnn, grand isle,
all right thank goodness it wasn t. bonnie schneider, thanks so much. appreciate that. all right the threat from tropical depression bonnie force said the evacuation of several oil cleanup vessels in the gulf and that includes some of the big ones at the deepwater horizon site but tropical depression bonnie has since faded, that s good news. david mattingly is live in st. tamany parish right now. what s the latest movement on some of those ships. reporter: well, fortunately because this storm isn t what they thought it would be, some those ships are now on their way back in. they expect to have that drilling operation up and going in the next 48 hours so they re trying to pick up right where they left off and try to lose as little time as possible as this storage continues to break apart. but that doesn t mean that this storm won t be causing some problems because right here in the coastal areas of louisiana, everyone s going to be watching the water. you notice it s a little bit
