White Star/Dawn PESHAWAR: The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) swept the Senate elections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by winning 10 of the 12 seats of the Upper House of Parliament on Wednesday. The PTI clinched five general seats, two of technocrats and women each and one of minorities from the province, while the opposition Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) and Awami National Party (ANP) claimed one general seat each. However, the government’s ally, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), failed to secure any Senate seat.

As many as 23 candidates are in the run for the 12 seats of the Senate from the province after two contenders retired from the race on Tuesday. The polling will be held in the hall of the provincial assembly in Peshawar. An official of the Election Commission of Pakistan said two candidates submitted applications for retirement from the contest. They include Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F)’s Tariq Khattak who was a candidate for the general seat and his party colleague Naeema Kishwar contesting for seats reserved for women.

Senate polls: 16 withdraw papers as parties finalise candidates in KP

Peshawar February 26, 2021 PESHAWAR: A number of candidates withdrew nomination papers on Thursday as the political parties finalised their contenders for the Senate elections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to an official of the Election Commission of Pakistan, 16 candidates withdrew their nomination papers. There are now 25 candidates in the run from KP, including 11 for general seats, five each for the seats reserved for women and technocrats. Four contestants are flexing muscles for seats reserved for religious minorities. Those who withdrew their papers for the general seats included former PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar, Dost Mohammad Mehsud who will now contest for the technocrat seat, PTI loyalist Najiullah Khattak, Nasrullah Wazir who is father of PTI MPA from South Waziristan, Naseerullah Wazir, Mohammad Rizwan, former MNA Hamidul Haq, Shakeel Afridi and Meena Khan Afridi. A total of 51 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the 12 seats of the Senate from the province. They include 22 for general seats, 13 for women, 11 for technocrats and five for minorities seats. An ECP official on Wednesday said nomination papers of a number of candidates were cleared on the first day of scrutiny. The nomination papers of an independent candidate for the general seat, Malik Najab Gul, were rejected.
