A recent survey by the Crime Coalition showed that the percentage of residents who feel safe dropped from 57 percent last year to 35 percent this year. “They want to feel safe in their neighborhood, in their community, and in the city,” New Orleans Police and Justice President Melanie Talia said. “And right now they don t.”

Bill to end concealed carry permit requirement passes Louisiana Senate

State Sen. Jay Morris authored the bill that would end the concealed carry permit mandate. | Louisiana State Senate A bill that would allow the carrying of concealed firearms without a permit passed the Louisiana Senate this week on a vote of 27-11 in spite of public safety concerns raised by law enforcement. The vote on Senate Bill 118, authored by Sen. Jay Morris (R-Monroe), took place after Gov. John Bel Edwards pledged that he would veto the measure. Under current law, it’s a crime in the state to carry a concealed firearm, although the law provides an exception if a gun owner obtains a concealed handgun permit from the Department of Public Safety and Corrections. SB 118 provides an exception to this permit requirement for people 21 years or older who are not otherwise barred from possessing a firearm.

Killer set free after 2002 shooting death of NOPD officer

But Davis reversal was not mandatory. While the Supreme Court is still deciding if its ruling should be retroactive, newly elected District Attorney Jason Williams announced in February that he was moving ahead on 22 cases, included Davis s. “For too long, New Orleans has simply been ground zero for unfairness,” Williams announced at a press event on the courthouse steps to announced the reversals in what he called the “Jim Crow Jury Project.” Williams’ program matches campaign promises he made to put the DA’s office on a fast track toward criminal justice reform. But reform can be met with sharp questions and heavy emotions from crime victims and their families, and that’s just what happened in the Davis case.
