The Consumer Fraud Task Force is reporting an increase in gift card fraud, noting that the losses last year were triple the previous three years. Consumers lost nearly $3 million in 2020, with a median loss of $700.
The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that gift cards are the top payment method for non-online purchase fraud with $245 million in losses over the last three years. Scammers will tell their victim to go to a specific store and purchase a specific card. Better Business Bureau investigator Don O’Brien tells The Big Z they will convey to you a sense of urgency.
