Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors World War II Veteran Don Herold. Don was a student at Kansas State when the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor hit, so he and his friends including former Senator Bob Dole signed up to be pilots. Unfortunately, they were color blind, so instead of flying planes Don ended up jumping out of them. While he scored high on tests and could have become an officer, Don became a paratrooper for the Army and served in the Pacific theater of World War II. Don has story after story of his jumps and the scary situations he jumped into, including jumping at a low altitude of only about 300 feet. Eventually the war ended and Don wrote a book for his wife and daughters. THANK YOU Don for your service.
