Officials: Lack of ice could be good and bad | News, Sports, Jobs

jriddle@thealpenanews.com News Photo by Julie Riddle A photographer captures morning sunlight over recently-formed ice at Seagull Point in Rogers City on Tuesday. ALPENA The big lake is blue instead of white and opinions are mixed as to whether that’s a good thing. After several months of gentle winter weather, Lake Huron has almost none of the crisp ice cover that often graces it this time of year. Ice is coming, experts say. In the meantime, some worry that the lack of ice threatens valued parts of Northeast Michigan, while others say the open waters of early 2021 offer a possible break from years of high water damage.

State bill would make it easier to get erosion control permits | News, Sports, Jobs

jriddle@thealpenanews.com News Photo by Julie Riddle Alpena resident Chuck Herring gestures to the high waters of Thunder Bay that have shortened his Partridge Point yard over the past two years. ALPENA Chuck Herring lost a chunk of his back yard when it slid into Thunder Bay, beaten by wind at waves near the tip of Partridge Point in Alpena Township. He’s not planning an aggressive assault to stop the process after all, he said, “you can’t fight Mother Nature. You’re not going to win.” His neighbors need to consider some erosion control, though, he said, eyeing a nearby home only yards from the cliff that’s been clawed and smashed by abnormally high waters for the past two years.

Funds could help with high-water cleanup | News, Sports, Jobs

sschulwitz@thealpenanews.com News Photo by Steve Schulwitz The Blair Street bridge in Alpena, seen here on Tuesday, has suffered significant damage from wind and waves that were more damaging because of record-high water levels on Lake Huron the last few years. Repairs could be made if the city qualifies for federal funding through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. ALPENA The federal government has committed more funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative over the next five years, and Northeast Michigan will benefit. The money will be used for repairing and maintaining shorelines and infrastructure damaged by record-high water levels on Lake Huron, local officials said. The money also will help eradicate invasive species and fund important studies geared toward protecting and preserving the Great Lakes and shores around them.

City sued over cannabis license applications | News, Sports, Jobs

sschulwitz@thealpenanews.com ALPENA One of the applicants for a medical marijuana provisioning center in Alpena has sued the city, accusing officials of violating the Michigan Open Meetings Act and failing to follow the city’s own rules in deciding who could open such businesses. Bob Currier, of Neighborhood Provisions, Currier LLC, and Katherine Schultz, a personal friend of the Currier family, filed the lawsuit against City Manager Rachel Smolinski, Building Official Don Gilmet, and Northeast Michigan Council of Governments Deputy Director Denise Clines, all of whom were involved in the application scoring. In court documents obtained by The News on Tuesday, the plaintiffs claim the city violated Michigan’s Open Meetings Act when a committee reviewed and scored the licensing applications because that wasn’t done in an open meeting. The filings also claim the city allowed several applicants to pay deposits after the deadline for payments had passed.
