Museum security officers, the people who probably spend the most time looking at art, will soon be organizing an exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) as guest curators.
The show Guarding the Art, due to open in March 2022, will bring together a selection of works that resonate with each of the 17 participating officers, and offer different perspectives from within the museum hierarchy, said the curator and art historian Lowery Stokes Sims, who helped develop the project.

Guarding the Art, an exhibition curated entirely by 17 members of the museumâs security team. The exhibition will draw from works of art in the BMAâs collection, with each work selected by one of the participating officers. As guest curators, the officers will be collaborating with leadership and staff across the museum to select and reinterpret works from a variety of eras, genres, cultures, and mediumsâoffering a particularly human-centered lens through which to consider the objects. In addition, the team is working with renowned art historian and curator Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, who is providing additional mentorship and professional development. Â
