This wasn't one of those planned bullpen days for Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, but quickly became one after two more of their pitchers got hurt. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd and reliever Will Vest both exited within the first two innings, before Andy Ibañez and Jake Rogers homered in a 7-2 win over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers on Monday night.
Harrison Bader hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and the New York Yankees overcame Gerrit Cole’s shortest start of the season and rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday. The Yankees won for the third time in 30 games when trailing after seven innings after entering the eighth with one hit since the second inning. Rookie Anthony Volpe sparked the comeback with a double off John King (1-1) and Jose Trevino followed with an infield single.
Ron Marinaccio retired Marcus Semien on a game-ending popup with two on in the ninth inning, Clay Holmes stranded a pair of runners in the eighth and the New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 1-0 Saturday after Aaron Judge said he isn’t close to returning from an injured right toe. Billy McKinney hit his fourth homer since he was brought up two weeks ago to replace Judge, who said before the game he has a torn ligament in his toe that causes pain while walking.
The Texas Rangers and New York Yankees are headed in opposite directions. “That's just a bonehead play,” New York's Isiah Kiner-Falefa said of his rally-stopping baserunning mistake earlier in the game.
When Adolis García came up in the eighth with two runners on and the Rangers down two runs, Texas manager Chris Woodward leaned over to his coaches. “I said, ‘It’s a pretty easy way to become an instant fan favorite if he hits a home run right here,’" Woodward recalled with a big grin. It's still early in the flowering of García's big league career, but the Rangers already think they've got something special in the Cuban slugger who propelled them to yet another dramatic win in Anaheim.
