i see that every day. every day. it s frustrating to know we had a blow here for four days. we knew oil was coming in. we knew it was going to happen. and, of course, the coast guard had to shut them down because of high water. we re located on inland waters. they could have done something, just tried something, double boom or do something. but nothing was done. it s in here now. we re all frustrated. we re going to lose our livelihood. give me an idea. i don t think people know how much money typically would you
that i can help them do in the midst of this. that s where i focus. the moratorium is controversial. do you support it? you know, i don t know? you you know, you could you could say that. but the economy is going to go to hell, you know? this is an oil-based economy. the thing that i think i want to do is look at i ve got little projects going. i go, that s a decision someone else is going to have to make on a bigger level. but we re doing things like we ve got a project where we ve got oil from the restaurants and fueling shrimp boats on them. is that right? oh yeah. that s something i can do. we re doing it. it s successful. ironically, people are going to me is, this thing, hopefully, will eventually get fixed. what are we going to do? go back to where we were? maybe it s a time for people to look at alternatives though it s controversial. much oil in our lives. much more so in the beaches today. what are we going to do about that? that s the question we try to ask our
then how long it will be again until we could come back home? and we still have family scattered in arkansas, baton rouge that s commuting back and forth still today. so you know, we add all of this up, it doesn t paint a good picture. so how hard has the african-american community really been hit? well, in this particular area here, the oil has not reached there, but they have not been allowed to actually fish. secondly, a lot of these folks lost their boats in hurricane katrina. the gentleman i just talked to. he had five boats. now he s down to two. the actual harbor we actually shot that in, i mean it was i would say one-third full, that s literally how many boats they lost. in this particular area, you got african-americans, vietnamese, hispanic. you have whites as well, but this area was largely african-american and they re sitting here saying we re dying on the vine here. they re trying to say, to the president, to thad allen, the
buried somewhere in the information. how much oil was spilled? how many jobs lost? how many reports of illness have been from the people doing the cleanup? you can t tell here. you have to dig a long time to find hints about it. if you want to know how many birds have been killed. you can find a nice feature about pelicans that they caught and cleaned up and set free, but you cannot get a direct answer to that question. what if you re worried about the odors along the coast down
larger more permanent one. if it works, the new cap, we re told, will collect more oil than the old one. but could it cause some new problems. a little concerned. and tom foreman joining me now to explain how that will work. the big things to watch this weekend. what you have right now on this well is a containment cap down here collecting the oil. you can see the oil gushing around the sides. there are vents so you don t have too much measure to blow it off because it s sitting there. that s what s happening right now. that oil is coming up to a ship above here. they have oil coming out of the vent to the side here and this weekend they try to move another ship in to place, maybe adding a fourth. overall, this will increase the containment of oil here from right now around 23,000 barrels a day to hopefully 50,000 barrels a day. that s the other important thing to watch this weekend.
