we heard over the election, the welfare ads and all of, that i thought they put that nonsense out there to satisfy their base. now i m noting how many of the republican strategists really believe those ugly stereotypes about voters of color. and let me further say, chris, that it isn t just the nonsense we heard in this election. black americans have understood, have heard republicans speak disrespectfully of us for the last 50 years. that s the reason black americans don t vote for the republican party. now for the last five to seven years, latinos have been hearing the same thing. if you continue to talk about us in this stereotypical, dismissive manner, we get the message.
first of all, shut up, then go blank yourself, a word we can t utter here, of course, and shouldn t have been uttered there, certainly not before the candidate was going to come out and impress us with what a wonderful character he was. the result was, let me say this, in my opinion, obama is incapable of saying shut up and go blank yourself in any normal circumstance and is capable, in fact, of uttering much more eloquent and i think proper replies. he was not given that opportunity. the words were put in his mouth. the words were vulgar and worse, they were disrespectful. i can remember a number of presidential campaigns where presidents who were running for re-election were not treated quite this disrespectfully. the other thing, we will remind back a few months ago when clint eastwood made this infamous ad in the super bowl that appealed to white working class voters. it was a car ad and everyone thought he s in the tank for obama but
not because of stop and frisk. one is gun control, which i m in favor of. that s right. here is mayor michael bloomberg. here he is. i understand why some people want us to stop making stops. innocent people who are stopped can be treated disrespectfully, that s just not acceptable, and my door is always open to new ideas and information, and just this past week, i did meet with reverend sharpton and others who disagree with me on this issue. what does mend it mean? he doesn t want to end it, he wants to mend it. how do you mend something that has some unbelievable numbers that we showed on the screen about how many stops and frisks are made on african-americans and latinos. what is mend here? he wants to sort maintain the policy but train the officers to i guess be more respectful or try to be less biased, but we so so much information on bias and profiling that it s going to be difficult to do.
