More than three million people have fled Ukraine, moving west — for the most part — to neighboring countries like Poland, Hungary and Romania. But one person has decided to move in the other direction, getting dangerously close to the Ukrainian border to help war refugees.
The Order of Malta is drawing attention to the risk of Ukrainians becoming human trafficking victims. Its embassy in Poland has issued a warning with safety rules for refugees that is being handed out on major exit routes in Ukrainian, English, Poland.
The organization ActionAid Italia has declared that the hosting plan for Ukrainian refugees currently being organized by the Italian government "still has many points to be clarified regarding its management." The group denounced "scarce transparency and problems" concerning the network of extraordinary reception centers (CAS) for asylum seekers.
After Poland, Hungary has taken in the largest number of people fleeing Ukraine. Most of the refugees are being cared for, not by the government, but by citizens and volunteers.
