Hancock receives $2 7 M federal grant for technology park | News, Sports, Jobs

gjaehnig@mininggazette.com HANCOCK The city of Hancock has been awarded a $2.7 million grant from Economic Development Administration (EDA), to provide flood resilient infrastructure for a new a business and technology park that will house technology and technology-driven light manufacturing businesses. According to a release from Gov. Gretchen Whimter’s office, the project will attract technological businesses through creation of an industrial park, stimulating the local economy. The project also invests in drainage infrastructure, preparing Hancock for future floods and making the community safer. The grant’s impact will aid recovery efforts from the 2018 flood, and attract businesses and private investment, which will create jobs and support the local economy.

May 3, 2021 LANSING Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo is awarding a $2.7 million grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to the city of Hancock, Mich., to provide flood resilient infrastructure for a new a business and technology park that will house technology and technology-driven light manufacturing businesses. “As we continue putting Michigan back to work, this $2.7 million grant will allow us to continue building our economy back better from the pandemic and create good-paying jobs,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “Michigan is grateful to the Biden Administration and Secretary Raimondo at the Department of Commerce for investing in our communities and helping us build up the industries of the future.”

City Park cabin to be remodeled by ski club | News, Sports, Jobs

janderson@ironmountaindailynews.com IRON MOUNTAIN A small cabin at the center of City Park will be rehabilitated, thanks to a $25,000 memorial fund contribution and the efforts of a local ski club. In 2017, the Menominee Range Nordic Ski Club gained permission from the city to use the former “rangers cabin” at the park as a warming shack and youth ski league storage space. However, it needs work, including new windows and a door, a fireplace insert and chimney repair, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said. Recently, the August Lilja Trust committed $25,000 to the project, the city council learned Monday. With the donation, the ski club is prepared to complete the project in 2021.

Mar 15, 2021 HARRIS TOWNSHIP Supervisor Peter Kleiman has been named 2021 president of the Michigan Townships Association (MTA). Serving more than 99% of Michigan’s 1,240 townships which includes more than 6,500 elected leaders plus tens of thousands of additional township appointed officials, staff and volunteers, MTA is the largest municipal association in the state, and one of the largest in the nation. Kleiman, who has been township supervisor since 1988, has served on the MTA Board of Directors since 2011. In addition to serving as township supervisor, Kleiman is a lifelong farmer, who retired from dairy farming in 2018 and is now raising beef cattle. He was president of the Menominee County Farm Bureau for 15 years and continues to serve on its board. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday announced appointments to the Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees and the Michigan Tech University Board of Trustees as well as the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents and the boards of trustees of Ferris State, Grand Valley State and Western Michigan universities. Named to the NMU Board of Trustees was Gregory J. Seppanen of Marquette, a retired teacher who taught U.S. history, government, world history and economics in the Marquette Area Public Schools for 24 years. Seppanen has also served as a Marquette County commissioner, supervisor of Chocolay Township and as a member of the U.S. Army Presidential Honor Guard. He remains an active member of both the Marquette County Planning Commission and the Central U.P. Planning and Development Regional Commission.
