Kentucky has largest percentage weekly increase in unemployment claims

U.S. unemployment claims dropped to 498,000 last week, down 92,000 claims from 590,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. New claims for regular unemployment benefits have now dropped for five straight weeks and reached their pandemic low last week. Claims for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), a federal program that offers benefits to workers who don t qualify for regular benefits, also declined to their lowest level since the start of the pandemic. The good news is coming from all sides, said AnnElizabeth Konkel, an economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab. New U.S. claims peaked in the pandemic in early April last year at more than 6 million claims on a seasonally adjusted basis. Claims have slowly fallen since then as COVID-19 cases decline across the country and consumer confidence increases as more Americans are vaccinated.

parent claims school board president got her fired

Rochester Community Schools District maintains a widespread custom or practice of contacting employers of . parents who vocally oppose the decisions of the Board of Education, the suit claims. That contact is an attempt to coerce, threaten, or manipulate said employers, according to the suit, which names Rochester Community Schools, School Board President Kristin Bull and Superintendent Robert Shaner. It seeks monetary damages, legal fees and an injunction against further retaliation against the plaintiff and a declaratory judgment that the district violated her First Amendment rights. The district did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the suit. Last year as the district delayed returning to in-person learning, Dinverno and other parents criticized the board and Shaner for not giving families a classroom option.

Detroit city clerk: Mayor Mike Duggan should be on primary ballot

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan should be certified for the August primary ballot because confusion over his campaign finance reports has been cleared up, City Clerk Janice Winfrey said Wednesday. In a brief interview, Winfrey said it s very clear the mayor s name should be on the ballot because Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett issued a statement Tuesday night declaring Duggan s campaign finance reports are in compliance. The agreement between city and county officials that Duggan s campaign finance reports are in order appears to nullify an attempt earlier this week from mayoral challenger Anthony Adams to derail Duggan s reelection effort by throwing him off the August primary ballot.

Steven Yeun gives Oscar plug to Detroit suburb

Steven Yeun gave a Detroit suburb what doubtless is its first shout-out during a live Oscar broadcast on Sunday night. Yeun didn t win best actor for his performance in Minari. In the biggest surprise of the night, the award went to Anthony Hopkins for The Father instead of the widely predicted winner, the late Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey s Black Bottom. But Yeun did get to share an early movie memory from his southeast Michigan childhood. While introducing the nominees for the visual effects award, he said, When I was 7 living in Taylor, Michigan, my mother took me to watch  Terminator 2 at the theaters. I m pretty sure she didn t know what the movie was about. And to her and my surprise, we got to see some
