Cybercrime reports up a third in Suffolk during Covid crisis

Published: 6:00 AM March 13, 2021    Suffolk s police and crime commissioner said he was appalled that criminals used the pandemic to exploit vulnerability for gain - Credit: PA Cybercrime increased by more than a third in 2020 as criminals tried to capitalise on various aspects of the Covid-19 crisis. Suffolk police dealt with 36.7% more incidents than on average across the previous three years, according to the most recent figures. The number of crimes increased from an average of 1,409 in 2017-19 to a total of 1,926 in the year of the pandemic. Meanwhile, the overall solved rate fell from 11.2% of crimes on average to 9.8% last year.

A murder investigation began after Wenjing Xu died at the Blue Sky Chinese, in Ynyswen, on Friday. Two men, who were seriously hurt, were later arrested and remain in hospital in a stable condition. South Wales Police asked motorists who were driving in Baglan Street between 11:50 GMT and 12:15 to check their dashcam footage for any evidence. We have a dedicated team of officers who have been carrying extensive inquiries in the area and I would like to thank all those who have got in touch so far, said Det Ch Insp Mark Lewis, of the force s Major Crimes Investigation Unit.
