Burlington, IA- The Burlington Police Department is inviting residents to "leave a light on for crime victims," in observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week. According to a news release, April 23rd through April 29th is National Crime Victims' Rights Week. During this week, we celebrate the accomplishments of the victims' rights movement and challenge our nation, state, and community to confront and remove barriers to achieve justice for all victims of crime. The Burlington Police Department and the Des Moines County Attorney's Office invite the public to observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week by turning their porch lights on through April 29th, in support of victims' rights and the commitment to create an environment where survivors have the confidence that they will be heard, believed and supported.
Burlington, IA- A Des Moines County Jury has found a Burlington man guilty of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree. According to the Des Moines County Attorney's Office, 50-year-old Raymond Leo Showers of Burlington was found guilty of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree Thursday, February 2nd, 2023, following a two-day trial. The charge stemmed from a report of an incident that occurred in December of 2021. Following an investigation by detectives with the Burlington Police Department's Criminal Investigations division. Showers was arrested in November of 2022. Sentencing for Showers is scheduled for March 6th, 2023 at the Des Moines County Courthouse. Showers faces a maximum sentence of 10 years.
