Newly elected legislators from the National Unity Platform (NUP) party will convene today at Jinja Nile Resort Hotel for the first time since the January 14 General Election.
Sources close to NUP told Daily Monitor that the agenda will focus on guiding the new MPs on the party’s main objective ahead of the swearing-in ceremony in May.

Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party leaders have rejected the proposed taxes and accused the government of being insensitive to the plight of those suffering as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Addressing the media at their head office on Tuesday, Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson, said they want government to account for all revenues collected from the existing tax measures.
“It is not that we are against taxation, what we need to know is how this money is being used. In other countries like the US, deductions on people’s salaries can go to as high as 50 per cent but as long as they are sure that when they go to hospitals, they will find medicine,” Mr Ssenyonyi said.

At least 222 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters have been released after spending more than four months under security detention around the country.
NUP party leaders, who spoke to Daily Monitor yesterday on condition of anonymity, claimed they have documented up to about 158 names of supporters who have been dumped in different places while others have been granted bail at different courts.

The Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons service, Dr Johnson Byabashaija, has said the current congestion in prisons can only be blamed on the challenges facing the the criminal justice system in the Judiciary and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office.
Dr Byabashaija argues that the remedy of building other prison facilities is not a sustainable solution but the government should allocate more funds to the Judiciary and DPP to ensure that process of serving justice is expedited.
