The Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government on April 19 to file a counter-affidavit in reply to a writ petition (PIL) seeking re-investigation into the alleged killing of 72 Muslims in Meerut’s Maliana village by the UP Provincial Armed Constabulary on May 23, 1987 and into other custodial killings during the 1987 Meerut riots.
The trial in the Maliana case has been going on in a Meerut session court for the last 34 years. According to the petitioners, key documents in the case, including the FIR have gone missing. Over 800 hearing dates have been given since proceedings began. The last hearing took place four years ago.
DRI officials conferred with Presidential Award

AAA Two officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Coimbatore, were conferred with the Presidential Awards for Specially Distinguished Record of Service for detecting extensive tax evasion and for anti-smuggling actions.
A release said that Assistant Director A. Lakshmi Kanthan, and Senior Intelligence Officer P. Kannabiran have so far seized 502 kg smuggled gold, 213.85 kg illegal synthetic drugs, 477 fresh water turtles that were illegally imported or exported, and red sander logs weighing 82.59 metric tonnes worth ₹ 22.59 crore. The officers have detected tax evasion cases involving duty amount of ₹ 3,900 crore. This is the first instance where two officers from the DRI, Coimbatore Regional Unit, have been awarded the Presidential Awards for Specially Distinguished Record of Service.
Special treatment to jailed Hallmark GM: Senior Jail Super Ratna Roy, Jailer Nur Mohammad withdrawn
Senior Jail Super Ratna Roy and Jailer Nur Mohammad Mredha have been withdrawn as investigation is underway over providing special treatment to Hallmark Group General Manager Tushar Ahmed by allowing women to meet the prisoner at Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Brigadier General Md Mominur Rahman Mamun confirmed the news.
Earlier on January 06, Tushar, brother-in-law of Hallmark MD Tanvir Mahmud, allegedly met a woman in the cabin of a prison official for about 45 minutes.
The woman was allegedly escorted to the cabin of a prison official by Deputy Jailer of Kashimpur Central Jail-1 Md Golam Saqlain, and two others. Senior Jail Super Ratna Roy was present at her office during the time.
