PUTRAJAYA: The Perikatan Nasional government’s plan to rehabilitate the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) is on the right track, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
This included a decision in October last year where Felda would issue a RM9.9bil sukuk and also take back 351,000ha it leased to Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd, now known as FGV Holdings Bhd, under its new recovery plan.
He explained that these measures allowed Felda to reduce its debts by allowing the government to acquire FGV shares.
“So debts will be lowered because the interest rate now is lower compared to when Felda acquired those debts. So that addressed the issue of debts, ” he said to reporters during a joint press conference here on Thursday.

PETALING JAYA: An accurate reflection of the country’s socio-economic demographics is vital to the national effort in eradicating poverty, a task made tougher in the Covid-19 economic landscape.
The government took heed of this and increased the national poverty line last year, the first review in 15 years.
Praised by many as a bold move, the revision saw an increase of the monthly household income from RM980 to RM2,208; pushing the country’s poverty rate from 0.4% in 2016 to 5.6% in 2019.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (pic) said studies conducted by his ministry estimated that the poverty line income (PLI) could increase by 3% due to the pandemic, pushing the country’s poverty rate to more than 8% in 2020.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to speed up work on the infrastructure needed at its south-eastern border with Kalimantan in anticipation of Indonesia moving its capital to Borneo.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Federal Government had given the go-ahead for the state to construct a road to connect the borders of Serudong in Kalabakan (Tawau district) to Simanggaris in Indonesia s Kalimantan.
He said the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) has been directed to take the lead in developing Sabah’s side of the Malaysia-Indonesia regional border.
