Riverside County, California, was one of the first counties in the country to face Covid-19, when repatriated US citizens were quarantined at March Air Reserve Base on January 29, 2020. Seeing how quickly things moved in China, then Riverside County Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser knew he had to act fast.
“From what we saw was going on in China at the time, it potentially, it could be very big,” he said.
On April 4, 2020, Kaiser took actions more protective than the state’s health orders, including prohibiting gatherings of people from different households in his county, as well as an order for people to mask in public.

This wasn t really a surprise Koksal s mother, Beth, works for a public health coalition in Garden City.
But Koksal didn t need any urging from his parents in order to be convinced to get the vaccine. It s an easy call for me to get the vaccine because, why not? Why wouldn t I? Koksal said. Why wouldn t I get it if I can help prevent the spread, you know, especially when I have a lot of people in my life that are vulnerable.
Now that he s been vaccinated, Koksal has become the de facto expert for his friends and classmates on what to expect if they get the shots.
Last 2 Kansas counties with mask rules ponder new guidelines

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) The last two Kansas counties that require residents to wear masks to slow the spread of COVID-19 will keep the mandates in place for now to discuss new federal guidelines that loosened mask requirements.
Health officials in Douglas and Wyandotte counties are reviewing guidelines announced Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that said people who are fully vaccinated do not have to wear masks outdoors and in most indoor settings. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said the state would immediately begin following those guidelines.
Officials in Finney County in western Kansas continue to accept COVID-19 vaccine shipments and have held inoculation efforts like this one in Garden City. But elsewhere across rural Kansas, demand for COVID vaccines has declined since late March. Sixty-two counties skipped their vaccine allocations from the state this week. Even as Kansas remains far from reaching the coveted public health standard of herd immunity against COVID-19 essentially starving off the virus because it runs out of vulnerable bodies more than 60 counties recently turned down their weekly allotment of vaccine doses from the state.
