If Senate Bill 1014 and House Bill 835 pass, a union would also not be allowed to represent employees if fewer than half of the employees join. Supporters say the bills safeguard teachers’ paychecks and improves transparency.
Brevard Federation of Teachers President Anthony Colucci said the bills don’t address any actual concerns that teachers have.
Senate Bill 1014, sponsored by Senator Dennis Baxley (R-Ocala), and House Bill 835, sponsored by Rep. Cord Byrd (R-Neptune Beach), are making their way through subcommittees before reaching the House and Senate for full votes. Similar bills were passed by the House in 2017 and 2018, but the Senate didn t approve the measures. If passed, the new rules would take effect July 1.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Florida Republicans are pushing a bill to make it more difficult to vote by mail.
The Florida Committee Substitute Senate Bill 90 prevents local elections’ supervisors from sending ballots to voters without a request, increasing the identification requirements, and banning drop boxes
Introduced by Florida Rep. Dennis Baxley (R-Ocala), the chair of the Ethics and Elections committee, the measure would also restrict vote-by-mail applications to one election cycle and require everyone who received mail-in ballots in the last election to reapply in 2022. Under the current law, applications to vote by mail are approved for two general elections.
