MASK MANDATE: Bill would require studies before district mask rules

State lawmakers are working to make it harder for schools to issue mask mandates.They’re considering a bill to do just that. It would require studies proving masks work, and could allow mandates to be canceled. The bill is one of many this session related to the pandemic. It includes a section requiring notification about certain vaccine exemptions, but there’s also the change to how school districts issue mask mandates.Senate Bill 658 would require school districts to show three relevant studies showing masks work in order to put a mandate in place. The bill passed the House Public Health Committee 9-1 this week after extensive questioning. “How do you determine what is three relevant studies? Who makes that determination of what is three relevant studies,” asked Rep. Carl Newton, R-Cherokee. Replied Rep. Kevin West, R-Moore: “Ultimately the school board is going to be the one that makes the determination. They will hear the evidence that’s presented to them and the
