NJ residents have mixed feelings about how minimum wage increase affects small businesses

There is some concern for business owners who have had a rough year amid the coronavirus pandemic. “I think it should be increased personally,” said David Maciorowski, owner of JDT Collision in Phillipsburg. “We don t hire for even minimum wage, we try to go just a little bit higher we know you can t exactly live off that,” he said. In February 2019 Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation into effect which set off a series of incremental increases, $1 per year, until 2024, at which point the minimum wage would reach $15. New Jersey Chamber of Commerce President Tom Bracken says there s not a lot of room for strained businesses to make any more adjustments for this increase right now, and he thinks it could have been postponed.

N.J. minimum wage is jumping another $1 an hour Friday. Ailing businesses say they can’t afford it. Updated Dec 31, 2020; Posted Dec 31, 2020 Gov. Phil Murphy gives a speech at an event where he signed a law gradually raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.Andrew Maclean/NJ Advance Media Facebook Share New Jersey’s minimum wage will rise $1 to $12 an hour on Friday, amid a pandemic recession that’s seen more than 1.7 million workers here lose their jobs or work hours and a third of small businesses close their doors. The scheduled wage increase, an annual step on a path to $15 an hour for most workers in 2024, comes at a time when workers desperately need more money in their pockets, labor advocates say but also when businesses can least afford it, lobbyists argue.

Losing Your Health Care to COVID-19

Losing Your Health Care to COVID-19 The pandemic has forced workers off of employer-sponsored plans and into the unknown. For more than forty-five years, Shirley Smith has been a dedicated member of the workforce. A can-do woman, she helped customers select furniture and trained legions of salespeople at Art Van in Taylor, Michigan. Steady paychecks enabled her to support her son, buy a home, and manage her diabetes. But in March, Smith’s world collapsed when the retailer, where she had worked for twenty-three years, announced that it was going out of business. During previous recessions, workers were focused on getting back to work, but now they must also consider whether they will survive the pandemic.
