that major demonstration area. the veterans are on their way. i saw some at the airport. i want to bring in lieutenant ivoryson to speak more about this. does the influx of veterans and we re hearing maybe 1,000, 2,000 veterans, does that concern law enforcement? it is very concerns. law enforcement s role is simple. it s providing for public safety. we re keeping north dakota citizens, our visitors in north dakota safe. while at the same time upholding the rule of law. when we are coming into north dakota with an intent of not abiding by the law, then that is something we are concerned with. what is the priority for a law enforcement? is it the protesters? is it the pipeline? you know what, all our priority is all of the above. we are protecting the citizens. we re protecting protesters. and while at the same time upholding the rule of law. sometimes that can conflict with one another. a lot of them, a lot of the protesters are trying to justify their ideology and allowing thems

nbc s carrie sanders has been monitoring the trial all day long and joins us now from sanford, florida. give us a sense, we ve been so focused what s going on inside the courtroom. give us a sense what s going on outside the courthouse with the crowds and the people who are gathered there. you know, actually the crowd s never really materialized here. it s 97 degrees outside. so that probably has a lot to do with it. we have the afternoon thunderstorms. and while they set up a little protest area or a demonstration area outside the courthouse anticipating that people may want to exercise their free speech, they actually don t have the ability to use speakers or hold umbrellas and so most of those who thought that they might come down here said they felt it was a little restricted. remember, when this first happened, most of those who were demonstrating protesters said it is that they wanted a fair
