Evanston NAACP hosts Black History Month event, highlights equity

Evanston’s chapter of the NAACP celebrated Black history and discussed local racial equity initiatives in education, policing and healthcare at their virtual Black History Month event Monday. The event featured a brief video showcasing the importance of teaching Black history and honoring historic figures like Charles G. Woodson, who ensured Black history would not be left untold in the country’s chronicles. Virtual participants included representatives from Evanston/Skokie School District 65, Evanston Township High School District 202, Evanston Police Department and the Health and Human Services Department. Additionally, Lucia Luckett-Kelly, creative educator at Phantasy Staircase Education, recited Langston Hughes’ poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.”

That man, who was identified as Yiran Fan, 30, a University Chicago doctoral student, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago police. Approximately 30 minutes later, Nightengale entered an apartment building in the 4900 block of South East End Avenue. He fired shots at a woman, who was serving as a security guard at the building. The victim, Aisha Nevell, 46, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Another woman, 77, was inside the building retrieving her mail when she was hit by gunfire. She is in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.
