EVERY PERSON OVER the age of 15 in Ireland drinks, on average, more than 10 litres of alcohol per year, according to new research.
The Health Research Board (HRB) has found that while alcohol consumption levels in Ireland have plateaued since 2013, people’s consumption remains “significantly higher” than the government’s 2020 target of no more than 9.1 litres of pure alcohol per person a year.

A further 10 per cent of 13-year-olds said they had taken alcohol from their home.
The latest survey by the Health Research Board has found people drank more wine and less beer last year with a 44 percent increase in off-licence sales during the pandemic.
Research officer Dr Deirdre Mongan says there are clear signs that harmful binge drinking is continuing at home. Binge-drinking, which is defined as six standard drinks, is considered a hazardous way of drinking, she explained.
