contenders in the race, romney doesn t have an actual loyal base of supporters who are with him, um, you know, through thick and thin. remember four years ago romney was considered a conservative alternative to john mccain. now that romney s running in a conservative field, the least conservative candidate. and conservatives continue to resist him in contest after contest, and we saw that this week. it doesn t mean rick santorum will definitely be the nominee, it just meaning that conservatives means that conservatives continue to strongly resist mitt romney. he doesn t have a sufficient base. he s not growing base at this point in the primary season, and that s why the path of the nomination just got that much harder. jenna: how do you build a base? for john mccain, he was considered, you know, not a traditionally conservative candidate, but he was a defense hawk. he was sort of the original person who, you know, led the fight against earmarks and pork barrel spending. he was also
we do start to address the defense spending caps. i think that s really important. but will it bring enough people on board? that s yet to be seen. dana: how big is the concern for people that have fiscal hawks concerns that this bill really gives them heart burn. it does give us heart burn. i am a fiscal hawk, but i m also a defense hawk. and so i have to reconcile those two versions of myself and decide, is this too risky for our federal government with the additional spending? i know that we need to do something for our military. we have decimated our military in the last number of years. we need to rebuild. we need to have strength and prevailing strength around the globe. we have to come to consensus on that. but i haven t seen enough of that sway yet in this bill. dana: what about the concern about entitlement spending and how we re going to deal with it going forward?
we haven t seen a lot of policies. to rick s point a lot of that is congress is striking stuff down. one of the policies that president obama was looking to push through was an infrastructure bill. and that would have created construction jobs. when you look at the most vulnerable demographics of the american workers it s the folks that lost their construction jobs. these are the folks that voted for obama. this would create jobs for them. david: even this president will say, he will give lib service to the fact it s the private sector, not the public sector that creates jobs. if you have public sector jobs you get it from somewhere. guess where it comes from? the private sector. president obama, david, should look at jfk as the model. jfk was a defense hawk. but he cut marginal tax rates which helped get the economy going. where the president doesn t fete it, where his policies are wrong, is that he views the economy as a zero sum game. which is if one person does well, then someb
