put a damper on the holiday plans. meteorologist karen mcginnis is monitoring the storm system. so what does it look like out there? just the combination of heavy volume of travelers at the major airports and the afternoon thunderstorms and then now we ve got kind of the key iengredient for some delays and they include atlanta, raleigh, washington, d.c. and new york and into boston. that i-95 corridor, very active for this evening. also portions of the midwest, from chicago to kansas city. and even into the pacific northwest, later on in the day there could be some minor weather related delays. now these are not cancellations. they strictly apply to weather. and you could see there is a very active weather pattern across much of the united states. we could see the rick for severe weather across the northern great plains and that northeastern corridor. all right. this is tropical storm collin. it formed at about 5:00 this morning eastern time. just off the coast of south carolina. and

the day. this tropical storm, latest update from the national hurricane center with tropical storm collins supporting winds of 40 miles per hour, moving off towards the northeast. this formed on land essentially in the charleston area, but that deep convection is still out over the open waters here as it moves to the northeast, it will start to make more of an east ward turn and then it will get caught up. so it moves away from land. so the problems with this is this over the next 24 hours mainly for these coastal areas around charleston, up to myrtle beach, then towards wilmington and towards the outer banks. heavy downpours and a word of caution, the rip current here is going to be very dangerous for folks. so if you are not a strong swimmer or even if you are a strong swimmer, you can be swept out very easily. thunderstorms will rock the portions of that interstate 95 corridor, boston, washington, d.c., new york, philadelphia, all these areas could be impacted and we ll see some del

carolina. it doesn t really have a clearly defined eye. there s a lot of deep convection along that eastern edge. this is tropical storm colin, has supporting winds of 40 miles an hour. it s going to be moving off towards the northeast. so it s going to take about a day or so. so if you re in myrtle beach or sullivan s island all the way up to the duck island area and in wilmington, you re going to be impacted by this because it s going to bring heavy rainfall and bring a rip current, meaning even a good swimmer could be impacted by that. those are those currents that will drag you out into the ocean and you could be in some real problematic situation. across the southeast, lots of rainfall here. the coverage is going to be fairly intense. now, this may not be a day long rainfall, but nonetheless, you have to dodge those thunderstorms if you re driving, i know this first hand from yesterday, those thunderstorms can really produce treacherous

how dangerous a situation it may or probably will be going into sunday as well. there you can see it really does start to taper off. i think the system is going to be a tropical storm when it enters the atlantic. not so much into the gulf of mexico. but when it gets on to the other side of the peninsula, that s when we think there will be more conducive environment for it to develop. all right. this is the forecast radar. there you can see kind of a messy picture going to early saturday. and then into the afternoon. still most of that deep convection from florida all the way into east central sections of florida. you saw those images early out of cuba. one fatality. lots of heavy rainfall. already some areas have picked up as much as 10 inches in florida between 4 and 8. and kim, it looks like some areas could see as much as a foot. so not out of danger just yet. no. and we ll be watching all weekend. karen maginnis, thank you so much. appreciate it. a very rare turtle just
