Portugal today counted 218 deaths, a new maximum of deaths in 24 hours and 10,455 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus, according to the Directorate General of Health (DGS).
Almost half of the deaths were in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region (88 deaths).
On Monday the health authorities reported a total of 167 deaths in 24 hours.
The DGS epidemiological bulletin also reveals that 5,291 people were admitted, 126 more than on Monday, 670 of them in intensive care units, i.e. six more, two figures which are new highs.

Portugal today registers 148 deaths related to Covid-19 and 10,698 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, the highest daily value of infections since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Directorate General for Health (DGS).
The number of cases today exceeds that of Wednesday, the day on which Portugal registered 10,556 infections.
The DGS epidemiological bulletin also indicates that 4,368 people are hospitalized, 128 more than on Wednesday, of which 611 are in intensive care, or 15 more.
Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, Portugal has recorded 8,384 deaths associated with Covid-19 and 517,806 cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and 121,815 cases are now active, 5,487 more
