Real estate heir robert durst faces charges in two states. a weapons warrant in new orleans could cause problems for the extradition in los angeles. let s get more from cnn s jean casarez. reporter: john the los angeles county district attorney s office filed charges of first-degree murder of robert durst alleging special circumstances. those are necessary in california to make a case death penalty eligible. the d.a. will determine at a later date if he will seek death. here in new orleans, robert durst had an extradition hearing. he would voluntarily go to the state and los angeles to face any charges. meanwhile, a source close to cnn says that when durst was arrested saturday night, they found in his hotel room which is right behind me a large amount
This guy was the triggerman as it were, or was even at the scene. so i think what we re going to see is he s been charged on one count. he s pled not guilty. he will be held without bail obviously, assigned counsel. and then i would look for what we call a superseding indictment because what the government said today and saying all along is that this investigation is ongoing. so they had the one in some sense, the easy count today, but i would expect in the future we will see a superseding indictment and very likely that his charges will become even more serious, that is include charges that are death penalty eligible. how long can we expect all this to take? he s brought here today. as jennifer griffin reported, he has a court appearance next week. almost certainly will be denied bail and held there in federal custody. yes. so how long does this all play out? when is it possible we would see a trial?
Wrote a letter, in fact, this letter, to the russian minister of justice confirming that edward snowden will not face the death penalty and will not be tortured if he returns to the united states. this is a no-brainer for those of us in the u.s. snowden has suggested those things may happen to him. so the ag felt it necessary to put all of this down on paper. the letter essentially states what we already know to be fact. that the charges against snowden are not death penalty eligible. and torture is illegal in the united states. the importance of this is that snowden has applied for temporary asylum in russia on grounds that he might be tortured or subject to the death beenalty. holder says that the assurances, he is now given, essentially eliminates snowden s claim he hub treated as a refugee. is this unusual? i don t think it is that unusual but then again, circumstances are extremely unusual. there is a negotiation or at least there has been as to
