AP Nasser Al Attiyah won his third stage of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia and cut his deficit to overall leader Stephane Peteransel to five minutes yesterday. Al Attiyah won the prologue and the second stage, and had to open the 403-kilometer loop around Wadi Ad-Dawasir, a blend of rocky canyons and dunes. The Qatari dominated, beating Henk Lategan of South Africa by 2 1/2 minutes. Peterhansel overcame an early puncture and was third, four minutes back.

JEDDAH: Nasser Al-Attiyah won a third consecutive stage of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia and remained five minutes behind overall leader Stephane Peterhansel on Wednesday. Al-Attiyah opened the 337-kilometer (209-mile) special between Wadi Ad-Dawasir and Riyadh and led for almost all of it, out-dueling Toyota teammate and Dakar newcomer Henk Lategan and seven-time champion Peterhansel. Lategan led the fourth stage briefly after the midway point, while Peterhansel started the last 40 kilometers more than a minute behind but powered home to finish second by just 11 seconds. “We aren’t making too many mistakes,” Peterhansel said. “In the old times, 50% of all contenders would be knocked out by driving mistakes or technical issues, but it’s become far less common, so you just have to hold on.”

The winner of the prologue and stages two and three extended his streak in Saudi Arabia by winning the section on Wednesday, between Wadi Ad-Dawasir and Riyadh, with 476 kilometers on link sectors and 337 on specials. Al-Attiyah beat the driver at the top of the general leaderboard, Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel, by 11 seconds, and he still holds the lead in the classification with 4 minutes and 58 seconds ahead of the Qatari.
