Another week, another overmatched opponent that Michigan completely manhandled. Last week it was East Carolina, this week it was the UNLV Rebels. Over the course of four quarters, Michigan steamrolled UNLV and new head coach Barry Odom, using overwhelming pizzaz on the defensive line to demolish the Rebels' pass protection and run blocking over and over again, while JJ McCarthy was again nearly perfect through the air. Michigan logged five sacks as a team, McCarthy was 22/25 for 278 yards for 2 TDs and 0 INTs, the Maize & Blue outgained the (other) Scarlet & Gray 492-229, and won the contest 35-7. The best kind of thing to take from a game against a solid G5 program that's just turned over the vast majority of their personnel is one that is opponent-invariant, and the most opponent-invariant thing in football is quarterbacks dropping dimes. This space has long maintained that if the offensive executes perfectly, they just get to win. Via that lens the most important development from the opener is the prevalence of "nice try, I win" plays. ECU had some moments of excellent coverage that just did not matter. McCarthy started out hot, casually dropping in an NFL-level 15-yard out to the field on Michigan's first drive that featured passes: In addition to the Here Look At My Arm Talent plays he also moved opponents with the power of his mind. The B1G on Peacock Era opened with a brilliant first 35 minutes from JJ McCarthy, followed by a comatose 25 minutes that begged the question "what's the point?" before culminating in the saddest field goal of all Sad Field Goals. East Carolina snapped the shutout to preserve whatever pride they had left but head back to Greenville soundly defeated, the 30-3 score perhaps not even the best reflection of the lopsided nature of the game when both starting units were in.
