Pogačar and UAE Team Emirates were uncertain starters for the race after being pulled from Fleche Wallonne after two members of the team returned positive COVID tests, which the team said were false positives. This year’s Strade Bianche returns to its traditional spring date on Saturday, with cold rain set to replace the heat and high temperatures of August 2020 when the Italian race kicked off the rescheduled competition calendar after the spring COVID-19 lockdown.
This year marks only the 15th edition of Strade Bianche but the Tuscan race has already earned ‘Classic’ status thanks to the breathtaking rolling dirt roads – with the clouds of dust evoking races of old – and the steep climb through the vineyards up to the finish in Renaissance Siena.
Chris Froome said he “just tried to hang on” as he finished within two minutes of the leaders on the UAE Tour’s second summit finish.
Froome, making his debut in Israel Start-Up Nation colours in the Middle East, is still returning to form as he continues his recovery from his serious injuries suffered in 2019.
While Froome struggled on the first mountain finish of the UAE Tour, finishing five minutes down on stage winner Tadej Pogačar at the summit of Jebel Hafeet on stage three, the four-time Tour de France winner only improved on the slopes of Jebel Jais two stages later.
