A COMPETITION has launched inviting photographers to take top snaps of Swindon s architecture. Visit Swindon hopes amateur snappers are inspired to search the town for unusual and interesting buildings then share photos of them online. This new challenge follows the success of the organisation s Hidden Gems 2020 competition which had more than 400 entries. One lucky photographer will win a £300 prize bundle sponsored by businesses in Swindon s Old Tow which includes £50 vouchers to spend in Food Magpie, Magnum Wine Shop, contemporary art and furniture gallery Oink, lifestyle store Kapada Vintage, Willoby’s Furniture, and the Wood Street Food Hall, along with a Sunday roast for two at The Bank restaurant in Wood Street.

Councillors hope for news of £5m Health Hydro bid in budget

AN ambitious plan to revamp the Health Hydro could move a step closer to reality when chancellor Rishi Sunak unveils his Budget today. Swindon Borough Council has bid for £25m of Towns Fund money from the government – and would spend a fifth of that at the Milton Road facility. The refurbishment of the 19th century Grade II -listed Health Hydro would include re-opening the small pool. Cabinet member for the town centre, heritage and culture Dale Heenan told members of the resources and corporate committee he was hoping for good news today. Coun Heenan said: “We had hoped to hear in December last year about our bid for money from the Towns Fund – but the government was busy with the increasing rates of Covid-19 and that announcement was delayed. We are hoping we will hear as part of the Budget speech.”

Save Oasis Swindon have penned an open letter to council leader David Renard Campaigners who want to see the Oasis Leisure Centre reopened as soon as possible have written an open letter to Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard. There are growing fears over the state of the building in North Star, which has sat abandoned since operator GLL decided in November it was no longer a viable concern. Images shared on the Save Oasis Swindon Facebook page show puddles of water under the famous dome and condensation on the windows. After a public virtual meeting of the group last week organiser Neil Robinson said he would write to Coun Renard asking for an immediate assessment of the state of the building, which has been shut since October, and the costs of getting it minimally operational again.

Bid for £50m government cash to regenerate Swindon town centre faces delay

They might be kept waiting for announcements on up to £50m worth of funding for major schemes until January. Swindon Borough Council has submitted ambitious £25m bids to two separate government funds – the Towns Fund and the Future High Streets. The Future High Streets fund money would be used to create a bus boulevard in Fleming Way as part of the regeneration of the area. The Towns Fund money is earmarked for seven projects, including fitting out the Carriage Works for Create Studios, a new use for the Brunel Centre tented market, regenerating the David Murray John tower, work on the Health Hydro and enabling work at the Kimmerfields development.
