800…and counting: Rotary Club reaches another milestone in signature program

Roy Gandy stood on Rotary ramp number 800 Saturday remembering ramp number one. The first recipient had suffered from polio and had a terrible time trying to get in and out of his home. Gandy and fellow Rotarians were there to install an air conditioner for the Madison County man, but it was obvious, he needed a ramp. “He was a good guy, but he was crawling in and out of his house,” said Gandy. “That ramp was our first one, a 24-footer. It took us most of the day to do it.” That was 1995. And over the next quarter of a century, the Rotary Club of Madison County has spread thousands of feet of ramps across homes in Madison County and beyond, helping improve the lives of one family after another.

The Curse of Oak Island: More evidence of ancient ships unloading precious cargo at the swamp

The Curse of Oak Island: More evidence of ancient ships unloading precious cargo at the swamp Wed Dec 16, 2020 at 4:52am ET Rick and Marty Lagina believe they are making real progress this season, despite having to sit so far apart due to Covid-19. Pic credit: History This week on The Curse of Oak Island, once again, it was all about the swamp and uncovering the secrets that lie underneath its murky depths. The team believes they may have uncovered a wharf or pier like structure, possibly hundreds of years old, that stretches out from the swamp into the ocean. And they reckon it was used to unload a large amount of cargo, hopefully, treasure.

Hillsboro Free PressCommission back to talking about roads

The Marion County Board of Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 14. With the cold and moisture, roads have returned as the main topic for the meetings. Brice Goebel, county engineer, gave the commissioners his weekly update regarding the roads. “We finished up Chisholm and put rock on there in anticipation of rain that never came. We will take top rock out there probably next week or when it isn’t as cold. If you haul it and try to work with it when too cold, it just clumps up and makes it difficult to work with,” Goebel said.
